How to Make a Pressing Board for Quilting
Quilting is a popular and rewarding hobby that requires precision and attention to detail. One essential tool for quilters is a pressing board, which provides a flat, stable surface for pressing fabric pieces. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your own pressing board for quilting, ensuring that you have a reliable and custom-fitted tool for your projects.
Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
– A piece of 1/4-inch thick hardboard or masonite (the size depends on your preference, but a standard size is 18 inches by 24 inches)
– A piece of batting (at least 1/4-inch thick)
– A piece of fabric for the outer cover (any color or pattern you prefer)
– Scissors
– Straight pins
– Sewing machine
– Thread
Step 1: Prepare the Hardboard
Start by cutting the hardboard to the desired size. If you are using a miter saw or a table saw, be sure to wear safety gear and follow proper cutting techniques. Once the hardboard is cut, sand the edges to ensure they are smooth and free of splinters.
Step 2: Attach the Batting
Place the hardboard on a flat surface, and center the batting on top. Cut the batting to slightly overhang the edges of the hardboard. Pin the batting to the hardboard, making sure it is taut and smooth. This will prevent the batting from shifting during the pressing process.
Step 3: Attach the Outer Cover
Place the fabric face down on a flat surface. Center the batting-covered hardboard on top of the fabric, ensuring that the batting is visible on all sides. Cut the fabric to overhang the edges of the hardboard by at least 2 inches.
Step 4: Pin and Sew the Outer Cover
Pin the fabric around the edges of the hardboard, making sure to keep the batting in place. Begin sewing the fabric around the edges, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. When you reach the corner, make a diagonal cut to create a mitered seam. Continue sewing until the entire edge is covered.
Step 5: Turn the Pressing Board Right Side Out
With the seam allowances folded under, turn the pressing board right side out. Press the edges with an iron to create a crisp finish. If desired, you can add a decorative edge or binding to the pressing board for an added touch.
Step 6: Enjoy Your New Pressing Board
Congratulations! You have successfully made your own pressing board for quilting. This custom-fitted tool will provide a stable surface for pressing fabric pieces, making your quilting projects more enjoyable and precise. Use your new pressing board to create beautiful quilts that you can be proud of.
